Handloom and Handicrafts of North East

Background:

With a long tradition of excellence in its craftsmanship North East’s handloom & Handicraft sector occupies a place of eminence in preserving its heritage and culture. The level of artistry and intricacy achieved in the handloom fabrics is unparalleled and beyond the scope of modern machinery. It caters to the needs of a diverse cultural ethos ranging from exquisite fabrics which take months to weave to popular items of mass production for daily use. Hand-weaving is one of the richest and the most resilient media of ethnic expression. Despite the unrestricted scope and opportunities of Handloom & Handicraft sector in the international market, the isolated and unorganized nature of handloom industry in North East has been facing constraints on its sustenance such as traditional production technique, low level of technology and skills; lack of modernization, quality up gradation, and research and development; lack of adequate, even and timely supply of inputs; lack of product and design innovation; non-availability of adequate and timely credit facilities; lack of skill up gradation of weavers in designing, dyeing, printing and processing; and inadequate organizational, marketing and technical support.

  • To showcase and promote the various handloom & handicraft products of North East in National Level.
  • To encourage the weavers of this sector in marketing their product.
  • To conduct the publicity campaign to promote products from SHGs.
  • To prevent the middleman intervention in this business.
  • To encourage entrepreneurship in handloom & handicraft sector and thereby helping the economic development of the region.
